Making the Change

So now you know the importance of fitness in living a healthy life. But how do you make the lifestyle change necessary to enjoy the benefits of fitness?

First, and probably most important, you have to decide to make the change.

What does decision-making have to do with adopting a healthy lifestyle?

Living healthy is a mindset. It’s a way of life. A healthy lifestyle goes beyond diets and fad workouts. Because of this, you have to make the decision to change your life.

Okay, so you made the decision. What’s next?

Once you make the decision, take some time to articulate your goals. What is it that you want to achieve? Do you want to control your weight? Control stress? Prevent disease?

Whatever your goals may be, when you create them, remember to be SMART.

S-Specific

• Make your goals as specific as possible. Avoid using phrases such as “I want to lose weight,” and instead use phrases such as “I will lose 10 pounds.” Specific goals are easier to achieve, measure, and manage.

M-Measurable

• Don’t just say “I want to be healthier”; use quantitative data such as blood pressure and cholesterol numbers from your doctor to track progress, for example.

A-Attainable

• You should have the skills and abilities that will enable you to reach your goals. Everyone has the abilities to get healthier, regardless of age, race, gender, and class!

R-Realistic

• If you set a goal that is too unrealistic, such as “lose 50 pounds by next Tuesday,” you’ll get frustrated and lose motivation to achieve any fitness goals.

T-Timely

• Set realistic time frames to your goal. With a deadline, you’re more likely to work towards your goals!
Now that you have your SMART goals, it’s time to take action. Next month’s article will focus on selecting the right program to help you achieve your health and fitness goals.
