The D.C. Public Charter School Board and Mayor Vincent Gray chose Achievement Prep to unveil the first set of rankings of the Performance Measurement Framework (PMF), because of Achievement Prep’s exceptional results for students growing up in some of city's most challenging demographics.

Achievement Prep – a public charter school in Ward 8 of Southeast D.C. - founded and lead by Building Excellent Schools Fellow Shantelle Wright - served as the host site earlier this week for the release of a new sophisticated evaluation tool that offers parents a better assessment of public charter school success in the District of Columbia.

Roland Parrish, Chair & CEO of the National Black McDonald’s Operators Association (NBMOA) addresses attendees at the 4th Annual Congressional Minority Business Awards at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel in Washington, D.C., on November 16, 2011. Members of NBMOA were the recipients of the “Economic Development Award,” which Mr. Parrish accepted on the organization’s behalf. Presented by U.S. Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson, she credited Parrish and the NBMOA with “injecting more than $3.2 billion in our economy and creating more than 70,000 jobs along with a host of community programs and educational assistance throughout the nation.”

The Ron Brown Scholar Program seeks to identify African-American high school seniors who will make significant contributions to society. Applicants must excel academically, exhibit exceptional leadership potential, participate in community service activities and demonstrate financial need. The applicant must be a US citizen or hold a permanent resident visa card. Current college students are not eligible to apply.

Howard University Radio, celebrating its 40th anniversary, announced today it will launch H.U.R. Voices on Thursday, December 1 on SiriusXM channel 141.

H.U.R. Voices will offer exciting, educational and entertaining original programming that examines and explores issues that affect people of color, including a unique mixture of talk radio, local and national news, and great music. The channel will feature WHUR and WHUR-WORLD signature programs like the "Daily Drum," a weekday public affairs program that will expand to one-hour; the "Dr. Audrey Chapman Show," with the relationship guru; and the "Sighlent Storm," the only radio show devoted to the issue of domestic violence.  New programs include "People Money Life," "The Traveling Eye" and "He Said She Said."  H.U.R. Voices will embody the mission of Howard University – to serve "America and the Global Community."

Black Women's Roundtable (BWR) Healthy, Wealthy and Wise National Empowerment Tour culminated their ten-city tour reaching out to women and girls last week in Riverdale, GA. The group is gearing up for the National Summit that will bring attendees from the individual cities to Washington, D.C. in 2012.
